Getting published is a much talked about topic amongst the Kenora Writer’s Group. This band of local writers from all genres and experiences meet monthly at the Kenora Library.
Two, Leanne Fournier and Anita Rasmussen, have recently bitten the “bullet” and are set to release their self-published books at a combined book launch, to be held at the Lake of the Woods Discovery Centre, Saturday, June 27 at 1 p.m.
Fournier’s poetry collection, Somewhere, My Home, is inspired by her experiences living in her wilderness home on the Winnipeg River during the deep isolation of the pandemica and the seasons that followed. During her writing and explorations, she learned that many of us find our way home through doors we didn’t expect. “I think the themes of the poems will resonate with people from the region, who might have similar experiences finding solace in the abundant nature around us,” she said.
In her book of historical fiction, Lucie – The Grandmother I Never Knew, Anita weaves a story of family lore surrounding Lucie, the book’s protagonist, whose gravesite sits oddly unadorned in the family plot. The story winds through Lucie’s observations watching her family deal with the consequences of their choices and decisions.
Everyone is invited to the launch, which will feature readings, interviews with both authors, some writing discussion, [possibly] live music, and refreshments. “We’re excited to welcome in summer sharing our stories with family and friends at this great location overlooking Lake of the Woods,” said Fournier.
Both books are available at Elizabeth Campbell books and The Lake of the Woods Museum gift shop in Kenora.
Leanne will also have her book available at the Saakaate House Community Dance Party and Market at the Lake of the Woods Brewers’ Village on June 13, Matiowski Market June 17, July 1 and 15, and at the Sioux Narrows Arts Festival, August 1 and 2.
